Baku Initiative Group pledges full support for Saint Martin's independence struggle
Saint Martin’s MP Franklin Meyers has said that the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) wholeheartedly supports the people of Saint Martin.
He made the remarks during the international conference "French and Dutch Colonialism on St. Martin - One Island, One People, One Destiny," organised by the BIG, Caliber.Az reports.
Meyers emphasised that the colonial powers are destroying Saint Martin.
"Azerbaijan is a friend of our island, and from here, we address the international community, speaking out against the colonisers. France and the Netherlands are suppressing our freedom. We are part of the colonial empire of the Netherlands," he added.
Moreover, Secretary of the PRO Soualiga Saint Martin Foundation Renate Brison has said that the BIG renders comprehensive support for struggle for the independence of Saint Martin. He highlighted that the initiatives of the BIG are assisting to bring the truth about countries suffering from neocolonialism to the global community.
"Baku has always stood by the countries colonised by France. The Netherlands and France have subordinated all the island's governing structures, but with your help, we will achieve the independence of Saint Martin," Brison added.
The Baku Initiative Group, which was established on July 6, 2023, during the ministerial meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement chaired by Azerbaijan, has played a crucial role in supporting independence movements. BIG has already organised up to 15 international conferences, including sessions at the UN headquarters in New York, Geneva, and Vienna, as well as in Istanbul and Baku, aiming to highlight colonialism as a persistent global issue in the 21st century.
