Baku launches Global Summit of Religious Leaders focused on climate change PHOTO

05 November 2024 09:57

Baku has hosted the opening of the Global Summit of Religious Leaders.

The event, held at Gulustan Palace, includes representatives of about 30 world religions, heads of authoritative religious centres — such as patriarchs, Vatican and Al-Azhar officials — and prominent religious and public figures, as well as state, scientific, and religious figures from 55 countries and 30 international organizations, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

This summit, part of COP29, aims to make a significant contribution to addressing the crucial issue of climate change, which is vital for the future of our planet. The summit is set to feature visits from foreign guests to the territories liberated from Armenian occupation.

The summit is organized on the initiative of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the State Committee for Work with Religious Entities, the Muslim Council of Elders, the Caucasus Muslims Department (CMD), and the UN Environment Programme as part of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

This event in Azerbaijan, which previously hosted the First and Second World Summits of Religious Leaders, seeks to make a meaningful contribution to the moral assessment of climate change, addressing a concrete problem of human significance and vital for the future of our planet.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's declaration of 2024 as the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World” supports a valuable global initiative promoting human solidarity for the planet's future. This event represents another international success for Azerbaijan, as world religious leaders come together to mobilize wise and effective proposals and efforts to combat climate change under the framework of COP29, referencing sacred religious values.

President Ilham Aliyev addressed the participants. The address was read by Prime Minister Ali Asadov.
