Baku raps detention of independence movement activists in Corsica
The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) strongly condemned the illegal detention by French police of activists of the new Corsican independence movement Nazione and members of their families.
Report informs, citing a statement by BIG.
The BIG recalled that on January 28, about 700 independence supporters in Corsica founded the new Nazione movement. The movement activists reaffirmed their current and future commitment to the struggle against French colonial rule.
“Two days later, on January 30, two Nazione activists were detained in the Borgu military camp. Their family members and another activist were summoned to the Bastia police station in the afternoon of the same day,” the BIG notes.
The statement says that the detention of activists was carried out using the most brutal methods: doors were broken, housing was damaged, and parents were arrested rudely and harshly in front of their children.
“This is a shame for a country that positions itself as the cradle of human rights. Illegal police harassment continues. The goal is to intimidate the Corsicans fighting for independence.
“We strongly condemn the illegal actions of French law enforcement agencies, call on the French authorities to respect the principles of justice and human rights, and ensure that such actions do not recur in the future. France must guarantee the Corsican people's rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression.
“We call on the French government to stop putting pressure on the colonial peoples and demand the immediate release of all detained activists. We also invite other non-governmental organizations and political movements to join this statement and support the Nazione movement,” the statement reads.
