Baku’s Islam Safarli Street transformed into pedestrian-only zone PHOTO
Work is underway to transform Islam Safarli Street in Baku’s Yasamal district into a pedestrian-only area, creating a new urban space for residents and visitors. The street, formerly known as Mashadi Azizbayov Street, stretches from the lower part of the Central Universal Store (CUM) to the Winter Boulevard and Beshmartaba.

According to a Caliber.Az journalist who visited the site, car traffic will be completely prohibited once the project is completed. Currently, construction crews are carrying out earthworks and replacing underground utilities, including water and sewage lines.
The project also includes the creation of pedestrian infrastructure and green zones, enhancing the area’s accessibility and aesthetic appeal. Islam Safarli Street, which runs from Fountain Square to Winter Boulevard, is known for its architectural landmarks, including the historic Baku bathhouse “Fantaziya.”
City officials say the transformation is part of a broader effort to improve urban spaces and make Baku more pedestrian-friendly.
