27 August 2025 18:25

Baku is set to host a major international conference on October 29, focusing on the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable ecological development in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories, particularly within the Karabakh economic region.

Titled “Conservation of Biodiversity and Sustainable Ecological Development in the Liberated Territories,” the conference brings together leading institutions and scholars from across the globe. It will serve as a platform for scientific collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the formulation of strategies to protect and restore the region’s unique ecosystems, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

The event is being jointly organized by a broad coalition of national and international institutions. These include the Institute of Dendrology, the Ministry of Science and Education, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and the Biology and Medical Sciences Department of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. International partners include Russia's Main Botanical Garden, the University of Massachusetts Amherst (College of Agriculture), Kazakhstan’s Institute of Botany and Phytointroduction, North Kazakhstan University named after Manash Kozybayev, Alfraganus University in Uzbekistan, Pakistan's OAK Consulting Organization, and Erzurum Technical University of Türkiye.

The central aim of the conference is to evaluate the current state of biodiversity in Karabakh, with a focus on the conservation and rehabilitation of rare and endangered species. Discussions will also cover strategies for sustainable ecological development, environmental monitoring, and the integration of scientific research into regional environmental policy.

In addition to its scientific objectives, the event is designed to facilitate meaningful dialogue among experts, institutions, and environmental stakeholders. It is expected to foster international cooperation and promote innovative approaches to ecosystem restoration in post-conflict areas.
