Baku to welcome 400 young global leaders for COY19 conference

19 October 2024 12:31

Leyla Hasanova, the youth climate advocate representing COP29 in Azerbaijan, has announced that Baku will host 400 young leaders from around the world for the Youth Conference (COY19).

This event is set to take place in the lead-up to the COP29 conference and will focus on critical discussions surrounding climate action, addressing key challenges, and exploring viable solutions, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“During COY19, participants will engage in meaningful dialogues, and the decisions made at the conference will be presented to the COP29 leadership,” Hasanova explained.

In a related development, Mukhtar Babayev, who serves as both the President-designate of COP29 and Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, revealed that significant preparations are underway for the upcoming COP29 conference, scheduled to occur in Baku this November.

Babayev emphasized that efforts are still ongoing to finalize the venue for the event, underscoring the importance of meticulous planning to ensure a successful conference.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is set to take place in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22. This decision was reached during the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Over the course of two weeks, Baku is anticipated to welcome approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international guests, highlighting the significance of this global event.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which was established during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to mitigate harmful human impacts on the climate system. The acronym COP stands for "Conference of the Parties," which denotes the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation and effectiveness of the UNFCCC.

This upcoming conference presents a crucial opportunity for young voices to contribute to the global climate dialogue, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement in shaping the future of environmental policies and actions.
