Bangkok floods leave 700,000 people affected VIDEO

Bangkok is facing severe flooding that is affecting about 329,000 families, or roughly 700,000 people, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

Deputy city governor Tavida Kamolvej said Lat Krabang was the worst-hit district, with between 30,000 and 40,000 people affected, Bangkok Post reports.

About 20,000 people were affected in Bang Kapi, including communities around the Khlong Chan flats, while Khannayao had another 30,000 to 40,000 victims.

Around 10,000 people were affected in communities near canals in Laksi, Saphan Sung and Suan Luang districts.

About 1,500 bedridden people have been moved from flooded homes to BMA hospitals.

The BMA is seeking donations of dried food and drinking water as flooding continues. “We need hundreds of thousands of bottles of drinking water, right now,” Tavida said.

City Hall is also seeking mobile kitchens, high-clearance vehicles and small flat boats to reach residents in deeply flooded areas.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said drainage operations were continuing and that water levels in canals should begin to fall.

“Flooding in communities will recede slowly because canal levels must drop first. Pumps will be installed in low-lying communities to speed up drainage,” he said.

Many roads remained deeply flooded on the morning of September 28.

Deputy governor Wisanu Subsompon said drainage was being accelerated to maximum capacity to lower water levels in the Saen Saep and Prawet Burirom canals, the main waterways in eastern Bangkok.
