BDI: German industry losing 15,000 jobs a month

25 July 2026 16:29

Germany's industrial sector is shedding around 15,000 jobs each month, the head of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) has warned, describing the situation as critical while expressing confidence that the sector can recover through innovation and investment.

Tanja Gönner, director general of the BDI, told German news agency dpa that the country's industrial sector is under significant pressure.

"I am convinced that if we do our homework, we will have every opportunity again. Innovation has long been a top priority for many companies," Gönner said.

She stressed that investment in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, would be essential to strengthening the sector's competitiveness.

"We have every opportunity, especially in industrial production," Gönner said.

According to Gönner, geopolitical developments, including U.S. tariff policies and China's growing industrial dominance, are also weighing heavily on German industry.

The BDI represents around 100,000 companies employing more than 8 million people across Germany.
