Beijing voices strong support for Cuba in face of US pressure
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing will continue to support Cuba in the face of the long-standing US blockade, stressing China’s backing for Havana’s sovereignty and development efforts.
Speaking during a meeting in New York City with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Wang praised what he described as the Cuban people’s resilience in resisting external pressure.
“The Cuban people, united in spirit and firmly defending their rights, have demonstrated a strong determination to resist the blockade and external interference, earning the respect of the international community,” China’s Foreign Ministry quoted Wang as saying.
“China will continue to uphold justice regarding Cuba, speak in its defence, support the just cause of the Cuban people, and promote the development of the economy and improvement of living standards in your country,” he added.
Wang also emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty and independence of all nations and opposing what he called pressure politics and hegemonism.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Rodríguez Parrilla thanked Beijing for its consistent support of Cuba’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and national security.
The Cuban foreign minister also reaffirmed Havana’s commitment to the “One China” principle and pledged continued support for Beijing on issues related to Taiwan, Xinjiang and Hong Kong.
