Belarus security chief warns of extremist plot to seize border areas

Extremist groups are reportedly planning to seize Belarus' border areas in a bid to prompt the West to deploy a "peacekeeping" contingent, according to Alexander Volfovich, the State Secretary of Belarus' Security Council.

In an interview with SB. Belarus Today, Wolfovich explained that a coordination centre has been established in Poland to facilitate these plans, while extremists are being trained in Ukraine by Western instructors, per Caliber.Az.

"These extremist formations may be involved in an armed operation to seize the border areas of Belarus, to declare this territory 'free,' and to prompt the introduction of a certain 'peacekeeping' contingent there by Western countries," Volfovich said.

He also noted that Belarusian radicals are participating in operations with the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) against Russian troops, gaining combat experience, though he added, "the rate of their irrevocable attrition is constantly increasing."

Volfovich went on to highlight the ongoing "anti-Belarusian campaign," which continues to back radical opposition groups in an effort to overthrow the current government. He stated that militants are being trained in Poland and Ukraine with the involvement of Western specialists.

The Security Council Secretary also pointed out that there is a growing effort to probe for vulnerabilities within Belarusian society, with the aim of organizing provocations that could destabilize the country.

In October 2022, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko accused Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine of preparing radicals for sabotage activities within Belarus. In November 2024, the Belarusian Defense Ministry reiterated concerns that opposition figures exiled from the country were plotting to overthrow the government.
