Belarusian opposition figure thanks Trump for release of political prisoners
Belarusian opposition figure Maria Kolesnikova has publicly thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for her release and for helping secure the freedom of other political prisoners.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Yury Dud (designated a foreign agent by Russian authorities), Kolesnikova expressed hope that the process of exchanging political prisoners would continue.
“I can only thank him for this – for freeing me and all the others. I hope this process does not stop… I can only say thank you,” Kolesnikova said.
She emphasised that she does not feel indebted to Trump, noting that the former president’s actions were not intended to create obligations. Kolesnikova added that she would continue to express gratitude if the exchange of political prisoners progresses further.
On December 13, Belarusian authorities announced an amnesty for 123 political prisoners, convicted on charges including espionage, terrorism, and extremist activity. Those released included prominent opposition figures such as Kolesnikova, Viktor Babariko, and Ales Bialiatski.
Meanwhile, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko signalled the country’s willingness to engage in dialogue with the European Union and the United States to reach broader agreements. However, he has previously vowed to “informationally bomb” those attempting to destabilise the country.
