Belarusian president pledges decisive action if country threatened “If you come to us in hobnailed boots — we will strike”
Belarus will not take part in a war unless it is attacked, President Alexander Lukashenko said on October 31, warning that any unauthorised incursion would be met with force.
Speaking to local residents during a visit to the Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve, Lukashenko told the crowd that his priority was to keep Belarus out of conflict, Caliber.Az reports per Belarusian media.
“We do not want to fight, and we will not become involved in this war if we are not provoked. That I promise you. That is the main task of the president and the authorities,” he said.
He added that the current international climate was uncertain and that Belarus must endure difficult times so that future generations could prosper. Lukashenko criticised neighbours for spending as much as 5% of GDP on defence and questioned the motives behind such high expenditure.
The president also appeared to reject any territorial ambitions by foreign states, saying attempts to seize western parts of Belarus or Ukraine “will not happen”.
He issued a stark warning to potential attackers: “If you come to us without permission in your hobnailed boots — we will strike”.
