COP29 presents a crucial chance to accelerate efforts in addressing the climate crisis. Over two weeks, Baku will host approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international attendees, including government leaders, business figures, and civil society representatives, all working towards concrete responses to record-breaking global temperatures and severe weather events impacting populations worldwide.
A major emphasis at COP29 will be on financing, with trillions of dollars needed to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions and safeguard lives and livelihoods from the escalating effects of climate change.
The conference will also serve as a pivotal moment for nations to submit updated national climate action plans under the Paris Agreement, which are due by early 2025. Done effectively, these plans would help cap global warming at 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and act as investment strategies supporting the Sustainable Development Goals.
