Belgian handymen discover gold bars hidden inside wine cellar walls

Construction workers in Belgium discovered a hidden stash of gold believed to be worth more than $10 million during renovation work on a building.

Belgian police said they were "immediately" contacted by the workers after they discovered "a large quantity of gold" hidden inside the building walls while working on a building in the east Flemish town of Dendermonde, according to local media reports.

The astonishing find includes around 50 gold bricks as well as piles of gold coins. Belgian news outlets estimate that the hidden treasures are worth an estimated €9 million. 

The find was stashed away in the cellar walls during the renovation of a house belonging to a local charity.

Amid the exciting news, local police have warned treasure hunters against visiting the site, revealing that the property has been fenced off with "several dangerous pits" and that the gold has all been removed. Authorities announced that they had "inventoried and secured" the assets as quickly as possible in a "high-security vault belonging to the federal government services."

Despite the find, the construction crew does not get to keep the gold as the rightful owner has the right to claim the gold within five years under Belgian law.
