Belgium conditions joining US coalition in Strait of Hormuz on ceasefire
Belgium has signalled its willingness to join a U.S.-led coalition to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but only on the condition that a ceasefire is achieved, Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken said on X (formerly Twitter), as reported by Caliber.Az.
“Belgium will join the coalition of the willing to guarantee the free maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz. We are working together with France and all other willing partners to achieve this strategic goal once conditions in the region will allow for it, such as a ceasefire. Freedom of navigation is essential for our security and economic stability,” Francken wrote.
Earlier, EU countries refused to participate in U.S. military operations against Iran, citing a lack of prior warning. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump labelled them “cowards” and vowed not to forget their stance.
