Bentley bets on subtlety with new electric model "Torcal"

07 July 2026 08:58

Bentley is preparing to unveil its first fully electric vehicle, named “Torcal,” as the luxury automaker enters a segment that has recently faced mixed reactions following high-profile launches such as the Ferrari Luce.

Ahead of the official debut scheduled for September 23, the company has released a teaser image and confirmed the model’s name, which continues its tradition of drawing inspiration from notable landscapes, as per foreign media reports.

“Torcal” references El Torcal de Antequera in southern Spain, described by Bentley as a “dramatic limestone landscape of stacked rock formations, cliffs and labyrinths.” The name is also derived from the Latin word “torquere,” meaning “to twist,” a nod to the vehicle’s expected torque performance.

Technical specifications remain limited. Bentley has indicated the vehicle will measure around five meters in length and offer a driving range exceeding 300 miles. The model is expected to take the form of a sport utility vehicle, positioned below the Bentayga in size, while being designed with everyday usability in mind.

The exterior design is described as conventional rather than polarizing. The vehicle features a prominent front end with a large grille incorporating illuminated 3D diamond elements, which can be deactivated. The overall silhouette is a relatively low-slung SUV profile, smaller than the Bentayga but benefiting from increased interior space due to its electric architecture. Rear styling includes muscular haunches and horizontal tail light strips.

Inside, the cabin maintains Bentley’s emphasis on luxury craftsmanship. The interior includes a central display that curves at the base and integrates with a row of physical controls, alongside high-end materials consistent with the brand’s heritage.

Bentley chief executive Frank-Steffen Walliser said: “For 107 years Bentleys have been the most incredibly complete cars - effortless performance, outstanding comfort, exquisite British handcraftsmanship using the best natural materials and a soundtrack with soul. Our new Torcal sets extraordinary benchmarks in every area that matters, and may just be the most considered car in our history.”

Industry observers note that Bentley appears to be taking a measured approach to its electric transition, opting for a design and positioning strategy aimed at broad appeal. In a market where demand for high-end electric vehicles has shown signs of softening, the Torcal is intended to emphasise the brand’s core attributes while integrating electric technology without making it the defining feature.
