Berlin backs Türkiye’s role in resolving Ukraine and Iran crises

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has expressed confidence that Türkiye can play an important role in resolving the war in Ukraine and the conflict surrounding Iran.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Berlin, Wadephul stressed that the European Union and Türkiye should strengthen strategic cooperation, Reuters reports.

"Turkey ​has the potential to exert ​considerable influence on these trouble spots, ⁠not only because of its ​geographical proximity, but also because of its ​enormous political and economic significance," Wadephul told reporters.

He also stated that Germany supports closer Turkish involvement in shaping the EU’s defence and industrial policy.

“If Turkey wishes to join the European Union, it ​will find a friendly and ​reliable ⁠partner in Germany,” Wadephul added.
