Berlin open to renaming Merz initiative on Ukraine’s EU path

Official Berlin is not insisting on the use of the term “associated membership” within Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s initiative regarding Ukraine’s prospects for joining the EU, German Ambassador Heiko Thoms said in an interview with “European Pravda.”

According to him, criticism of the term stems from its similarity to the existing Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, which has been in force for more than a decade.

“I also understand that. But we are not tied to this name. If someone proposes a better one — we are all for it,” the diplomat said.
