Berlin sees hundreds detained, dozens of police injured during NYE’s celebrations

Berlin authorities reported a tense start to the New Year as around 400 people were temporarily detained during New Year’s Eve celebrations across the city. Law enforcement officials faced numerous attacks, resulting in injuries to at least 24 police officers.
According to the local newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, a total of 3,200 police officers were deployed on Berlin’s streets to manage the festivities.
Emergency services were also heavily engaged throughout the night. The fire department received 1,830 calls, slightly fewer than the previous year, but in 11 incidents firefighters faced harassment or attacks.
Ambulance services were called a record 970 times.
