"Better than war": Lebanese leader cites diplomatic progress with Israel

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced progress in negotiations with Israel, emphasising that diplomatic efforts are preferable to a new military conflict.

"Progress has been achieved in the negotiations, and in any case, this is better than the outcomes of war. The scale of Israeli attacks in our country has already decreased following the signing of the framework agreement. There is no disagreement among the Lebanese regarding our objectives — from the withdrawal of Israeli troops and the return of prisoners to the restoration of what was destroyed," Aoun stated.

The president emphasised that Beirut remains unwavering regarding national territory and foreign military presence.

"Ultimately, we will not allow Israel to remain on a single inch of our land, nor will we allow a single soldier of its army to be on our soil," he noted.

Aoun also directly challenged long-standing political slogans advocating military action over diplomacy.

"We constantly hear slogans claiming that what was taken by force can only be reclaimed by force, but real facts on the ground have proven the falsity of this statement. The time has come for the residents of the South to find peace and live on their land instead of endless wars waged in their names for goals foreign to Lebanon," he said.

In conclusion, the president reaffirmed his resolve to rebuild state institutions despite internal opposition.

"My goal today is to restore the state at all costs, despite the resistance of those trying to destroy its foundations and prevent its revival," Aoun declared.
