Bezos takes on Musk: Blue Origin announces satellite internet network

22 January 2026 11:21

Blue Origin, the space company owned by American billionaire Jeff Bezos, has announced plans to launch its own global satellite network, TeraWave, which will directly compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink.

The network will consist of 5,408 satellites positioned in low and medium Earth orbit. TeraWave is aimed at corporate clients, data centres, and government institutions, and will be capable of delivering data speeds of up to 6 terabits per second. Deployment is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The move marks Bezos’ entry into the rapidly expanding satellite internet market, where Starlink currently dominates with over 9,000 satellites in orbit and around 9 million subscribers, CNBC notes.

Until now, Blue Origin has focused on suborbital space tourism and the development of its heavy-lift New Glenn rocket, which underwent testing in 2025.
