BFM: French ministers, officials could face pay cuts

09 September 2026 11:23

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is considering reducing the salaries of ministers and advisers in ministerial offices as part of preparations for the 2027 budget, BFMTV reports.

“The prime minister does not believe it is possible to ask the French people to make sacrifices if the government itself does not take similar steps,” one of his allies said.

According to the source, the measure would not significantly reduce the budget deficit, but would be consistent with the principles of social justice.

A cut of around 10% to the salaries of MPs and senators is also being discussed. The prime minister’s office noted that this issue falls under the authority of parliament.

The last time ministers’ salaries were cut in France was in 2012 under President François Hollande.

Their salaries, including those of the president and prime minister, were reduced by 30%: a minister’s gross monthly pay fell from €14,200 to €9,940.
