BI: German troops on border with Russia getting latest tanks

A new German brigade stationed near Russia’s borders is betting on tanks — even though these expensive armoured vehicles have been damaged and destroyed by cheap drones during the war in Ukraine.

NATO allies continue to invest in tanks amid the Russian threat, and Germany is no exception, per Business Insider.

The report refers to Germany’s new 45th Armored Brigade in Lithuania, marking the country’s first major permanent foreign deployment of a brigade since World War II. The unit is equipped with Leopard 2A8 tanks.

At the same time, the brigade’s commander, Christoph Huber, told Business Insider that “this brigade has the highest priority in Germany” and will be equipped with the most advanced German military technology.

According to him, it is “extremely important” for the brigade to have heavy armored vehicles, adding that this indicates it will be equipped with “the most modern German main battle tank.”

“The 2A8 is the most advanced Leopard tank produced by KNDS Deutschland, and it features modifications such as drone protection inspired by tank performance in Ukraine. The new modifications to the Leopard include the addition of the Trophy Active Protection System for detecting incoming threats like anti-tank missiles and drones, armor upgrades to the vulnerable turret, and sensor improvements,” the publication noted.
