Biden announces death of former president Jimmy Carter, declares national mourning

30 December 2024 12:24

US President Joe Biden has officially confirmed the death of James Earl Carter, Jr., the 39th President of the United States, who passed away on December 29, 2024.

In a statement, Biden lauded Carter as a man of "character, courage, and compassion," highlighting his extensive service to the country and his pivotal role in global peace and human rights, Caliber.Az reports, citing White House.

"President Carter was a man of character, courage, and compassion, whose lifetime of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in our history," Biden said. "He embodied the very best of America: A humble servant of God and the people, a heroic champion of global peace, and a leader whose moral clarity and hopeful vision lifted our Nation and changed our world."

Biden's tribute reflected on Carter’s distinguished career, beginning in 1943 as a cadet at the United States Naval Academy, and later his service in the Navy before returning to his roots in Plains, Georgia. There, Carter helped manage his family’s peanut farm and became an active leader in his community.

His political career culminated in the presidency, where he oversaw significant initiatives, including the creation of the Department of Education and the Department of Energy. He also played a crucial role in advancing nuclear non-proliferation, negotiating the Panama Canal treaties, and facilitating the Camp David Accords in 1978.

"His faith in the people was boundless, just as his belief in America was limitless," Biden said, emphasizing Carter’s moral clarity in both domestic and international policy.

After leaving office, Carter continued to work on humanitarian causes through the Carter Center, focusing on health, peace, and human rights. He worked relentlessly to combat disease, house the homeless, and promote global democracy. His leadership in the areas of human rights and global peace remained a hallmark of his post-presidential life.

As a tribute to his legacy, Biden announced that flags would fly at half-staff across the United States for 30 days and directed the Armed Forces to render appropriate honours. Additionally, January 9, 2025, will be designated a National Day of Mourning. "I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr.," Biden stated.

Biden also extended the invitation to people around the world, encouraging them to join the United States in remembering Carter's extraordinary contributions to peace, democracy, and humanity.

The announcement came with a somber reflection on Carter’s partnership with his wife, Rosalynn, who he was married to for over 77 years. "The love Rosalynn and President Carter shared is the definition of partnership, and their devotion to public service is the definition of patriotism," Biden added.

Carter’s legacy will continue to resonate in the nation and around the world, as his example of humility, service, and moral leadership remains an inspiration to future generations.
