Biden to mark end of presidency with farewell address on Jan. 15

11 January 2025 17:00

President Joe Biden will address the nation one last time on January 15, the White House confirmed.

His farewell speech will be delivered from the Oval Office, a symbolic location reserved for significant moments in American history, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media sources.

While specific details about the content of Biden's speech remain under wraps, the White House has indicated that the address will reflect on the president's time in office and offer a message about America's future. It will come just days before his political rival, President-elect Donald Trump, is sworn into office.

"Biden’s farewell address will highlight the challenges the country faced when he assumed the presidency and the progress made during his time in office," said a senior administration official. “When President Biden entered office, our alliances had been badly damaged. We were falling behind in our competition with China. US troops were still engaged in America’s longest war. Our adversaries were gaining strength. And the nation and the world were in the midst of a global pandemic.”

The official emphasized that under Biden’s leadership, the US has made strides in restoring its international standing. “President Biden confronted these challenges head-on. Now, as he prepares to leave office, our country is in a much stronger position, and we have delivered tangible results for the American people."

In his farewell remarks, Biden will outline how America’s global partnerships and alliances are stronger than ever. “Our alliances and partnerships are the strongest they’ve ever been thanks to our work,” the official added.

Presidents traditionally use their farewell addresses to reflect on their legacy, acknowledge the accomplishments of their administration, and offer their support to the incoming administration.

Biden’s farewell address follows in the footsteps of previous presidents. Four years ago, former President Donald Trump delivered a pre-recorded farewell speech, offering “our best wishes” to the incoming Biden administration, while stressing the importance of keeping America “safe and prosperous.”

In his 2017 farewell address, former President Barack Obama warned of threats to democracy, stating, “Our democracy is threatened whenever we take it for granted.”
