Bloomberg: US pushes EU for 100% tariffs on Russian oil exports to China, India In next sanctions package

18 September 2025 20:00

Brussels plans to approve the 19th round of sanctions against Moscow, with the relevant decision set to be finalised as early as September 19.

After the phone call with US President Donald Trump, the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the package would target crypto, banks, and energy, the people close to the talks told Bloomberg.

The US is insisting that G7 countries impose tariffs of up to 100% on China and India for purchasing Russian oil. Washington believes this should push Vladimir Putin to negotiate with Kyiv. However, such a request could face resistance in European capitals.

Trump reiterated his preference for tariffs over sanctions during the phone call, sources stated.

The G7 plans to agree on a package of measures against Russia in the next two weeks. These include sanctions against major oil companies and the schemes through which Moscow sells oil to third countries.

As a reminder, the EU was also considering restrictions against several companies in India and China that help Russia evade sanctions.

Trump has repeatedly stated that the EU should completely stop buying Russian oil. Most countries have already stopped importing it via pipelines and sea, but Hungary and Slovakia remain reluctant.

Furthermore, a number of countries continue to purchase liquefied natural gas from Russia. The EU has committed to completely phasing out Russian oil by 2027, but von der Leyen wants to accelerate this process.
