Boeing, Anduril set to compete in US Army’s new missile interceptor program

15 August 2024 02:24

Boeing and Anduril are gearing up to participate in the US Army's new program aimed at developing a second supersonic cruise missile interceptor.

Jim Bryan, Boeing's director of integrated air and missile defence, confirmed that the company is preparing its proposal for the upcoming competition, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.

Although specifics were not disclosed, Bryan noted that Boeing's team is evaluating the use of non-traditional rocket motors for their submission and considering whether to opt for innovative designs or stick with proven technologies.

Meanwhile, Anduril is deciding whether to bid as a prime contractor or partner with a major defense firm. The California-based company, known for its advanced rocket motors used in defence and space launch systems, is exploring how to incorporate solid rocket motors into their proposal.

Earlier this year, Anduril secured a $19-million contract to develop second-stage rocket motors for the US Navy’s Standard Missile-6.

The US Army's new interceptor program, announced in January 2023, aims to address escalating threats from adversaries. The new missile is expected to be compatible with the Indirect Fire Protection Capability Increment 2 (IFPC Inc. 2) launchers, similar to the AIM-9X Sidewinder.

Program executive officer Maj Gen. Frank Lozano stated that the program is set to begin next year with funding secured for five years.

Boeing and Anduril will face competition from Lockheed Martin and Rafael, who have also expressed interest. Rafael plans to propose a variant of its Tamir interceptor, while Lockheed has indicated it has the necessary expertise but has yet to reveal its approach.

It is uncertain whether RTX, the manufacturer of the first interceptor, will present a more advanced solution to counter the threat of supersonic cruise missiles.
