Brazil backs new declaration to protect Caspian Sea at COP30
A joint declaration aimed at enhancing cooperation to address the falling water levels of the Caspian Sea was adopted in Belém, Brazil.
According to local media, the agreement was approved during a high-level event held in the Azerbaijani pavilion as part of COP30.
The declaration reaffirms that the Caspian littoral states are upholding their earlier commitments outlined in the Baku Declaration, which was adopted at COP29 in Azerbaijan the previous year. The Baku Declaration established a foundation for scientific collaboration, information sharing, and coordinated measures, and the new document adopted at COP30 is presented as a continuation of these efforts.
The updated declaration underscores objectives such as strengthening cooperation in scientific research, monitoring, and data exchange. It also highlights a shared intention to advance joint activities with the United Nations and to take collective steps aimed at ensuring sustainable development and long-term stability across the Caspian region.
The event was initiated by Azerbaijan and jointly organized by the COP29 Presidency, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and the Interim Secretariat of the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (the Tehran Convention).
