Brazil, India explore potential swap of military aircraft

13 September 2024 07:47

Brazil and India are exploring a potential swap involving military aircraft, with discussions centered on Brazil acquiring India's HAL Tejas fighter jets in exchange for Indian interest in Brazil's Embraer C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft.

A Brazilian delegation is currently in India to discuss this prospective deal, which could align with each country's current needs, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Brazil’s interest in the HAL Tejas is driven by its requirement for a cost-effective, multi-role combat aircraft. The Tejas, equipped with advanced avionics and a fly-by-wire control system, offers high maneuverability and a maximum speed of Mach 1.8. Its operational range of approximately 3,000 km makes it a suitable alternative to the aging F-16s that Brazil had previously considered acquiring from the US.

Conversely, India's interest in the C-390 Millennium is due to its superior payload capacity of 26 tons, which surpasses the 20-ton capacity of the C-130J Super Hercules. The C-390 is noted for its versatility in strategic airlift missions, short takeoff and landing capabilities, and its potential for aerial refueling and medevac operations. Integrating the C-390 into India's transport fleet would modernize its logistics operations significantly.

The proposed swap could benefit both countries: Brazil would gain advanced fourth-generation fighters, while India would acquire a modern transport aircraft. Both nations have been enhancing their defense partnerships, recognizing the value of such equipment in strengthening their military capabilities.

The potential deal also aligns with the BRICS coalition's goals, which encourages defense collaboration among its member countries. Brazilian Defence Minister José Múcio has emphasized the importance of such cooperation for achieving greater self-reliance and operational efficiency.

In summary, the swap of Brazil’s C-390 Millennium for India’s HAL Tejas represents a strategic opportunity to bolster the military capabilities of both nations, leveraging their BRICS membership to foster stronger defence ties.
