Brazil’s Lula offers US mediation in Venezuela talks

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has offered US President Donald Trump a role in mediating to resolve the situation in Venezuela, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has said.

The discussions between the president took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, Al Jazeera reports.

According to Vieira, Lula said Latin America is a region of peace and offered to help mediate with Venezuela, whose president, Nicolas Maduro, said the US is “fabricating” a war against him after it sent the world’s biggest warship towards his country.

Lula reiterated Brazil's commitment to Latin American peace and expressed readiness to facilitate dialogue between the conflicting parties.
