BRICS - fastest-growing alliance on planet Serbian minister says

27 October 2024 12:50

Minister in charge of international economic cooperation matters in the Serbian government Nenad Popovic has said that BRICS has emerged as the fastest-growing alliance in the world, sparking interest from Serbia.

"I can express my personal opinion. I would like Serbia to become a partner country of BRICS. This is because BRICS is the fastest-growing economic alliance in the world," he stated, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

The minister noted that he is "truly a big fan of BRICS" and expressed confidence that closer ties with the alliance would be "very beneficial and desirable" for his country.

Commenting on other advantages of BRICS, Popovic highlighted that "Serbia has no unresolved political issues with any BRICS member state."

"They respect our territorial integrity and our independent and free policy. They do not dictate to us; we chart our own course for economic development. We have excellent relations with BRICS member states," he said.

The minister said that Serbia will closely monitor the developments within the alliance.

"There are still many issues to address. We anticipate new clearing centres, mechanisms for settlements among BRICS member states, and new digital and crypto strategies. We hope for the advancement of these institutions, as they will help enhance economic relations," Popovic added.

BRICS, established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, welcomed South Africa in 2011. As of January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia are set to become full members of the group.

The 16th BRICS Summit, a highlight of Russia's chairmanship in the organization, took place in Kazan from October 22 to 24. On the second day of the summit, participants adopted the Kazan Declaration, which addresses key issues such as the association's development, its stance on global challenges, and the resolution of regional crises, including those in Ukraine and the Middle East.
