Britain announces number of people detained since start of riots
UK police have detained around 380 people since the start of the riots that broke out after a knife attack on children in England's Southport.
The head of the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC), Gavin Stevens, assured the public that "a united and determined police response is in place across the country", which is "doing everything possible to deal with these riots and ensure the safety of citizens", Caliber.Az reports, citing NPCC.
To date, he said, "378 arrests have been made." Police expect that number to "grow daily" as law enforcement continues to identify those involved and apprehend those responsible.
Stevens said police do not consider the said riots to be protests in which people are exercising their democratic rights.
"This is unnecessary violence and we have seen that important community centres such as the Citizens Advice Bureau and the library have been completely destroyed," he said.
