Britain’s new prime minister unveils sweeping cabinet reshuffle

Newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced his cabinet lineup, according to the PM’s Office.

Among the key appointments, John Healey has been named Chancellor of the Exchequer. He previously served as Defence Secretary from 2024 until his resignation in June over disagreements with former Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding defence funding, Caliber.Az reports.

Meanwhile, Ed Miliband has been appointed Foreign Secretary. He previously led the Labour Party between 2010 and 2015.

Shabana Mahmood will remain Home Secretary, a position she has held since 2025, while former Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has been appointed Health Secretary. In turn, Wes Streeting, who previously oversaw the health portfolio, has been named Defence Secretary.

Elsewhere in the reshuffle, Louise Haigh has been appointed First Secretary of State, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Cabinet Office. Pat McFadden retains his role as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, while Lisa Nandy remains Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Bridget Phillipson also keeps her position as Minister for Women and Equalities.

Heidi Alexander will continue as Transport Secretary, while Lucy Powell has been appointed Education Secretary. At the same time, Alex Norris will serve as Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, and Angela Eagle has been named Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary.

In the energy sector, Miatta Fahnbulleh has been appointed Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. Angela Rayner will serve as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, while Jonathan Reynolds takes charge of the business, innovation, science and trade portfolio.

Additionally, Emma Reynolds has been appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

According to the official release, Burnham made a total of 27 appointments. Those leaving the cabinet include Rachel Reeves, David Lammy, Darren Jones, Steve Reed, Peter Kyle, Richard Hermer, Liz Kendall, Jo Stevens and Hilary Benn.
