Britain to supply enriched uranium for Ukraine’s nuclear power plants

The United Kingdom will provide supplies of enriched uranium for Ukrainian nuclear power plants, allocating £210 million (around $280 million) for the purpose, according to a statement from the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

“The UK will power Ukraine’s nuclear plants for the next two years with £210 million of UK Export Finance support to enable UK-based Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s nuclear power producer, Energoatom,” the statement said.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in early June.

“By securing Ukraine’s energy supply, the deal strengthens Ukraine’s resilience and ability to resist Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure, directly supporting UK and Euro-Atlantic security interests,” the statement added.

The arrangement continues cooperation initiated in 2023, when Urenco and Energoatom signed a contract for enriched uranium supplies running through 2035. Urenco and Energoatom are central to the long-term supply framework.
