British FM calls for urgent reopening of Strait of Hormuz
02 April 2026 16:30
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has emphasised the “urgent need” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, convening a virtual meeting of representatives from more than 40 countries to discuss the vital shipping route.
Cooper said Iran’s “recklessness” in blockading the waterway was “hitting our global economic security” as she opened the session, Dawn reports.
The Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint connecting the Persian Gulf with international trade routes, handles a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas exports.
The meeting aimed to coordinate diplomatic efforts among the international community to ensure the free and safe passage of commercial vessels through the strait amid escalating regional tensions.
