British top politicians urge Trump to rethink ties with Elon Musk after anti-UK remarks
Senior politicians from three of Britain’s largest parties have asked newly elected US President Donald Trump to reconsider his relationship with Elon Musk after the billionaire made a series of inflammatory remarks about the domestic political situation in the United Kingdom.
Musk’s posts on his social media platform X have included calls for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s imprisonment, the release of right-wing activist Tommy Robinson, and the replacement of Nigel Farage as leader of Reform UK. On January 6, he even polled whether “America should liberate the people of Britain from their tyrannical government,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Bloomberg.
This has led Starmer’s Labour government, the Conservative opposition, and Reform UK to question whether Musk’s relationship with Trump can continue. Some British politicians are concerned that Musk’s actions are damaging the incoming US president’s reputation, particularly in the UK. The three major UK parties, which combined for 72% of the vote in last July’s general election, are wary of Musk’s influence, which could undermine the “special” UK-US relationship.
Trump’s spokesperson reiterated the president-elect’s support for Musk, calling him a “once in a generation business leader.” However, Musk’s online behavior, particularly his fallout with Farage, has raised concerns among Trump’s allies. Some have suggested Musk’s increasing meddling in British politics may soon sour his relationship with Trump.
Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats, the third-largest party in the UK, joined the criticism. Party leader Ed Davey called Musk’s interference in British democracy unacceptable, noting his lack of understanding of UK issues.
Musk’s escalating attacks on Starmer, including accusations related to a child sex abuse scandal from his time as a prosecutor, have added to the tensions. Although Musk had supported Farage and Reform UK, his endorsement of Robinson, a far-right figure distanced from Farage, led to a break in their alliance. Farage criticized Musk’s stance, which prompted Musk to call for his replacement as leader.
Pollster Scarlett Maguire noted that Musk’s influence in the UK may wane following his fallout with Farage. Despite the controversy, some in Reform hope the relationship can be repaired. Nonetheless, Musk’s actions have given Starmer the confidence to directly address the issue, marking a significant shift in the political landscape.
