Brussels urges diplomatic solution over potential US action on Iran World does not need another war

Top European Union diplomat Kaja Kallas urged restraint over potential US military strikes on Iran, saying the world does not “need another war,” POLITICO reports.

“The situation around Iran is very intense,” Kallas told reporters as she arrived for a gathering of EU foreign ministers in Brussels. “We don’t need another war in this region. We already have a lot, so we have stressed the diplomatic way out of this.”

US President Donald Trump has indicated he is considering limited strikes aimed at forcing Iran to end its nuclear program. The president has also discussed launching a broader campaign intended to drive Tehran’s leaders from power.

The United States has increased its military presence in the region, though Washington continues to pursue potential negotiations with Iran. Trump-appointed negotiator Steve Witkoff told reporters that the president is “curious” about “why they [Iran] haven’t capitulated.”

Iran has warned it would retaliate against US bases if attacked.

European powers, with limited military presence in the region, have largely remained observers, though Kallas emphasized that the EU shares US concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and ballistic missile program. “It’s true that Iran is at its weakest point that they have been,” she said.

Despite Iran’s vulnerabilities, Kallas called for diplomacy over confrontation. “We should really be using this time to find a diplomatic solution,” she said, highlighting the EU’s preference for resolving the crisis through negotiation rather than military action.
