Brussels warns of mounting energy costs from Gulf disruptions
13 April 2026 20:12
The European Union has overpaid more than €22 billion for fossil fuel imports over the past month and a half due to rising energy prices linked to the Middle East conflict.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made the remarks at a meeting of the College of Commissioners on April 13, European Pravda reports.
She said the additional costs did not bring the EU “a single extra molecule of energy,” underscoring the scale of the crisis’ impact on the European economy.
Von der Leyen also stressed that even in the event of an immediate end to hostilities, disruptions to energy supplies from the Persian Gulf would persist for some time.
