Bulgaria summons Ukrainian ambassador over drone incident

10 August 2026 17:22

Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova summoned Ukrainian Ambassador Olesya Ilashchuk over the entry of a Ukrainian military drone into Bulgarian airspace near Kardam and expressed “serious concern” over the incident.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said during the conversation, Minister Petrova stressed that any unauthorised entry into Bulgarian airspace is unacceptable, Caliber.Az reports.

“The Bulgarian side requested that Ukraine provide all available information that could help fully clarify the circumstances of the incident,” the ministry noted.

On August 8, a drone exploded on Bulgarian territory near the border with Romania.

It was preliminarily identified as a “Maya” decoy drone used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. No injuries or damage were reported.

Following the incident, Bulgarian authorities introduced additional measures to protect critical infrastructure.
