Bulgaria to strengthen security at military and strategic facilities

18 September 2026 15:03

Bulgaria’s critical infrastructure and strategic facilities, including weapons storage sites, require additional protection, prompting the authorities to order measures to strengthen their security.

Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev made the remarks at a briefing following a meeting of the Security Council under the government.

“We discussed issues related to the security of critical infrastructure facilities and the protection of sites where explosives and ammunition are produced and stored. Serious deficiencies were identified. There are not enough counter-drone systems, and the level of protection of infrastructure facilities also needs to be increased. Instructions have been given to regional police directorates to step up police patrols, while the development of modern security systems must also be ensured,” the minister said.

Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said additional funding would be needed to purchase counter-drone systems, as well as targeted funding for the construction of video surveillance networks and modern security systems.

He added that negotiations on the issue were already underway, with agreements expected to be signed by the end of 2026.
