Bulgarian PM raises visa-free travel with Trump

On May 20, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said that he had raised the issue of visa-free travel for Bulgarian citizens during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, signalling Sofia’s renewed push to join the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.

Speaking ahead of a cabinet meeting, Radev said Bulgaria expected Washington to urgently consider lifting visa requirements for its nationals, Caliber.Az reports per British media.

“In my conversation with the American president, I insistently raised the issue of lifting U.S. visa requirements for Bulgarian citizens, and I expect this ⁠matter to be considered urgently,” Radev said.

Radev ‌noted that ⁠he spoke to U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and expected a request for U.S. military aircraft to remain in Sofia beyond May.
