Bulgarian president signals possible swift start for new legislature

21 April 2026 11:47

Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova said the country’s newly elected National Assembly could convene for the first time as early as next week, depending on the completion of the vote-counting process, BGNES reported.

Yotova indicated that final election results are expected to be announced by April 26. However, she noted that the Central Election Commission may finalise the count earlier, which could accelerate the timeline for convening the new parliament.

Speaking to journalists, Yotova addressed the prospect of the government resigning after the formation of the new legislature, describing such a move as a standard political practice.

She also congratulated the winners of the election and expressed appreciation to Bulgarian voters for their participation, highlighting the importance of resisting vote-buying.

“Of course, I congratulate him. I congratulate everyone who has won. But first of all, let me congratulate all Bulgarian voters who believed in their vote, who believed that they are stronger than bought votes,” Yotova said.
