Bundeswehr chief calls on Germans to prepare for defence

Germany’s citizens should be prepared to help defend the country in response to new security challenges, the Bundeswehr’s Inspector General, General Carsten Breuer, has said.

Speaking at a defence conference in Prague, Gen Breuer said modern threats required Germany to reconsider its defence strategy and involve both civil society and industry more closely, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

He said hybrid threats could not be countered by the armed forces alone. In the event of a conflict, Germany would need closer cooperation with industry to expand its defence capabilities.

Gen Breuer also said Germany should draw lessons from Ukraine’s experience and not rely solely on existing approaches.

Germany is also preparing its healthcare system for a possible military conflict. According to the Bundeswehr, the country’s healthcare services could face up to 1,000 wounded military personnel arriving each day in the event of a confrontation.

German authorities have linked the preparations partly to the potential threat posed by Russia.
