Bundeswehr general: Germany should lead by example in military power
Bundeswehr General Ralph Hammerstein has said that Germany is one of the most powerful countries in Europe and should set a strong example for others in military affairs.
In a recent interview with CNN, Hammerstein discussed the state of the German military and the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities, Caliber.Az reports.
“We [have] got to step up, and we will do that,” Hammerstein stated, emphasising the need for Germany to enhance its military readiness in the face of growing security challenges.
While acknowledging that "every army in the world, in history and also in the future, will always claim not to have enough" the general attributed Germany’s current military situation to the "peace dividends" of the 1990s, when many European countries, including Germany, reduced defense spending following the end of the Cold War.
Despite these challenges, Hammerstein expressed confidence that Germany is on the right track to building a robust and capable military.
