Bundeswehr rejects claims Germany prioritizing outdated weapons

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has defended the Bundeswehr’s modernization and rearmament programs, rejecting criticism that Germany is investing heavily in outdated military equipment.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting of the German Parliament’s Defence Committe, Pistorius dismissed claims that high defence spending was being directed toward obsolete technologies, saying such criticism “point in the wrong direction.” “Simply put,” he stressed.

As an example, Pistorius cited the acquisition of the new Leopard 2 A8 battle tank. “It is anything but junk. It is high-tech equipment,” he emphasized, adding that cutting-edge technologies “play a fundamental role in acquisitions.”

The minister also highlighted the growing importance of artificial intelligence and unmanned systems in Germany’s defence procurement plans. He noted that, for the first time, a dedicated support program had been launched for universities and research institutes working in these fields.

“Artificial intelligence plays a fundamental role. Unmanned systems at sea, in the air, and on land play a fundamental role in the acquisition projects of the coming months,” he explained.

“Therefore, this accusation is simply false. We know very well where we need to look and what acquisitions are necessary for that,” the minister stated.

Pistorius’ remarks came after Moritz Schularick, president of the Institute for World Economy (IfW), criticized what he described as the Bundeswehr’s investment priorities. Schularick argued that Germany was placing too much emphasis on acquiring tanks and ships instead of investing in drones, robotics and other emerging technologies.
