Burj Al Arab to close for first major renovation since 1999

15 April 2026 20:43

The Burj Al Arab, one of Dubai’s most iconic luxury hotels, is set to shut down during a major 18-month renovation, a staff member confirmed on April 15, marking its first such overhaul since opening in 1999.

Owner Jumeirah Group said in a statement on April 14 that the refurbishment would be carried out in phases over approximately 18 months and led by Paris-based interior architect Tristan Auer. The company did not specify that the property would close during the works, Reuters reports.

However, a staff member said the hotel would suspend operations during the renovation period and is offering alternative accommodation in nearby properties for guests with existing bookings. The period of closure remains subject to change, the person added.

The sail-shaped hotel, a flagship property of Jumeirah and one of Dubai’s most recognizable landmarks, sustained minor damage in early March when debris from the interception of an Iranian drone attack struck its facade.

The “long-awaited” renovation is not linked to the March incident, the employee said, and Jumeirah did not associate the project with the ongoing conflict in its official statement.

The timing of the refurbishment is notable, however, as tourism to Dubai has been affected by regional instability tied to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. Flight disruptions across the United Arab Emirates have impacted travel flows, while luxury hospitality groups have warned of mounting pressure on profits amid weakening visitor demand.
