Cambodia, Thailand reach immediate ceasefire agreement
Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” set to take effect at midnight local time (21:00 GMT+4), Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on July 28, following several days of deadly clashes along the two countries' disputed border.
The agreement came after urgent talks between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, held at Anwar’s official residence in Putrajaya, just south of Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia played a key mediating role in facilitating the negotiations, Caliber.Az reports via CNN.
As part of the agreement, military commanders from both sides will meet on July 29 to coordinate efforts to de-escalate tensions and maintain peace in the border area.
The recent hostilities, which reignited a long-standing territorial dispute, have left at least 35 people dead and more than 200 injured, according to official figures from both nations. Each side has accused the other of instigating the violence.
