Canada's PM calls US-Israeli strikes on Iran “failure” of international order

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a “failure” of the international order, criticizing the United States for not consulting its allies before launching strikes on Iran, Reuters reports.

US and Israeli forces carried out attacks against Iran on February 28 after nuclear negotiations with Tehran stalled. The conflict has since spread beyond Iran’s borders, with Iranian strikes targeting Gulf states including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, as well as US embassies in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. These developments prompted Washington to close diplomatic missions across the region.

Speaking at the Lowy Institute think tank in Sydney during a visit to Australia, Carney said: “The current conflict is another example of the failure of the international order, despite decades of UN Security Council resolutions, the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency in a succession of sanctions and diplomatic frameworks.”

He added, “Iran’s nuclear threat remains, and now the United States and Israel have acted without engaging the UN or consulting with allies, including Canada.”

Earlier, Carney called for calm in the region, urging all countries involved in hostilities, including the US and Israel, to respect international rules of engagement.
