Canada’s wildfires could become among worst on record, expert warns

29 July 2026 20:04

Wildfires spreading across Canada could become some of the most severe in the country’s recorded history, according to a forestry and climate expert.

Lori Daniels, a professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Sciences at the University of British Columbia, said in an interview with Russia's state-run Ria Novosti that the current wildfire season is on track to rank among the worst ever recorded in Canada.

“This year will be one of the worst on record in terms of the scale of wildfires in Canada,” Daniels said, noting that the fires that began in May have already expanded significantly.

She warned that the high-risk wildfire season is not yet over, with another six to eight weeks remaining before conditions typically improve. Current rates of fire spread are already above average, increasing concerns about further damage.

Canada has experienced increasingly severe wildfire seasons in recent years, with experts linking larger and more intense fires to factors including hotter temperatures, dry conditions and changing climate patterns.
