Carney calls for talks after US imposes new tariffs on Canadian goods

21 July 2026 12:30

Canada is ready to engage with the United States to resolve outstanding trade issues Prime Minister Mark Carney has said after Washington imposed an additional 50% tariff on Canadian goods.

In a post on X, he described the measure as "the latest in a series of unilateral U.S. trade actions" that violate the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), Caliber.Az reports.

He said the Canadian government had presented detailed and comprehensive proposals "to resolve this dispute and to modernise CUSMA" and was prepared to begin discussions with the United States in the coming weeks.

The prime minister also argued that the trade dispute between the two countries "has raised costs for families, particularly in the U.S."

Earlier, US President Donald Trump signed proclamations imposing additional tariffs on Canadian imports.
